A New York City court judge gives a three-time-loser inner-city teenage boy the choice of prison for a year or spending a year as a member of a coastal lifeboat rescue crew in Ireland.

The lad chooses what he thinks will be the easy life among clueless country folk only to experience the hardest work he's ever known.  And in the process of self discovery, he learns to use his hands to help rather than harm.
